Do they fail more often than they work?
I don’t mean long distance relationships, I just mean meeting online and then eventually going on a real date. How often will these couples end up dating or get married?

I can’t see them being very successful because when you meet someone online you already have this built up image of how they are going to be and if they don’t fit that image you will be disappointed…you can never truly tell how someone acts or talks from online conversations.

There is reality, and then there is virtual reality. Virtual means "almost as good as" such as virtually a genius or I am virtually finished with it. Its true of online anything. It might not be better. But its a pretty good option.
Ive many times heard the argument "You dont know if they are really young, or really blonde, or really have those stats, or really even female"
and I reply "Oh yeah? Have you been to a bar recently?"
Most of the people who put down online dating consider bars or dance clubs to be the mostly likely alternative. But give them a hard time about not being able to really chat with the person and taking them home. Then when they start taking stuff off you find out that they arent really young, arent really blonde, dont really have those stats, and arent even female. Sure people can fake things online. For awhile. But over a period of time you tend to really get to know the person. Better I feel than in many real world situations. Its not infallable but its not a total failure either, and real-world meetings arent always perfect either.
ON THE OTHER HAND:
There are some new hazards. People in some countries looking for mates in another just to change citizenship. Or people in some countries trying to get you to come there because the laws there arent a problem for things like kidnapping. Or just the scam lately of getting a free plane ticket across country by pretending to be a cute young person. Be VERY careful about how and where you finally meet someone.
