Does the Bible really advise against mixed relationships?

I asked another question in this section and someone raised this issue, but I can’t find it where they stated and I can’t believe that it’s true, or is it?

What does the Bible say about interracial marriage?"

Answer: The Old Testament law commanded the Israelites not to engage in interracial marriage (Deuteronomy 7:3-4). The reason for this is that the Israelites would be led astray from God if they intermarried with idol worshippers, pagans, or heathens. A similar principle is laid out in the New Testament, but at a much different level: “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). Just as the Israelites (believers in the one true God) were commanded not to marry nonbelievers, so Christians (believers in the one true God) are commanded not to marry unbelievers. To answer this question specifically, no, the Bible does not say that interracial marriage is wrong.

A person should be judged by his or her character, not by skin color. All of us should be careful not to show favoritism to some, nor be prejudiced or racial to others (James 2:1-10, see especially verses 1 and 9). A Christian man or woman’s standard for selecting a mate should always be to find out if the person they are interested in is a Christian (2 Corinthians 6:14), someone who is born again by faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:3-5). Faith in Christ, not skin color, is the Biblical standard for choosing a spouse. Interracial marriage is not a matter of right or wrong, but of wisdom, discernment, and prayer.

The only reason interracial marriage should be considered carefully is because of the difficulties a mixed-race couple may experience because others will have a hard time accepting them. Many interracial couples experience discrimination and ridicule, sometimes even from their own families. Some interracial couples experience difficulties when their children have skin tones of different shades from the parents and/or siblings. An interracial couple needs to take these things into consideration and be prepared for them, should they decide to marry. Again, though, the only Biblical restriction placed on whom a Christian can marry is whether the other person is a member of the Body of Christ.

This advises Christians to not form important relationships with people who don’t believe as they do, as it will create problems later when values clash. Mostly it means to avoid people who will lead you to do wrong — hence the "wickedness". We can have lots of nice, non-believing friends.

There is nothing in the Bible about racially mixed marriages, if that’s what you mean. The issue was never discussed. Only in the Old Testament was "foreign" marriage discouraged because it was most likely to a person outside the religion. So religious faith is the only barrier.

P.S. I am not a "holy roller" as people like to stereotype. I am Catholic but I do not practice any specific religion. I do, however, believe in God and have my own views of religion. I am also a lesbian. It’s funny how many people will judge me based on my sexuality but I guarentee that my relationship with God is just fine. It basically just boils down to everyones own INTERPRETATION of the bible. The bible has come down through hundreds of years and in many different versions. Just like telling a story to one friend in California, by the time it reached New York, the story will have slightly been altered, if you will. Some people interpret the bible word-for-word and others try to see beyond the literal wording. Both instances are ok.

    Mr. Darryl K.
I just wanted to comment for a moment. First, I very much respect your opinion and beliefs but regarding the second part about interracial children and couples experiencing discrimination I think is a generalized statement. There are millions of white, black, asian, hispanic people who experience discrimination everyday as well as poor people, wealthy people and so forth. I think that interracial couples are more prevalent and not so uncommon anymore. It’s actually becoming the norm. Once again, I mean no disrespect, I just wanted to comment…..I have 2 interracial Godchildren.

As far as "mixed" in race, absolutely not. It does say don’t be "unequally yolked". To translate in modern terms and interpret – it warns against marrying people of a different faith. Not that it is forbidden, it just helps save heartache in the future. I grew up with a Christian mom and a Muslim dad, I can attest to why it is advised against… but if it is a race issue, it’s not forbidden at all! I mean, Solomon got married to people of all different cultures. His downfall was their other religions (going back to the not marrying different faiths).

No it does not advise against mixed relationships, it advises againest mixing our religion with another religion.
1 Corinthians 1:10 "Now I exhort you, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that you should all speak in agreement, and that there should not be divisions among you, but that you may be fitly united in the same mind and in the same line of thought." Such unity would never be achieved if the individuals did not meet together, so as to benefit from the same spiritual feeding program, and respect the agency through which such instruction was provided. John 17: 20,21 Soon God’s Kingdom will destroy the present ungodly system of things, including all who do not genuinely love God and their fellowman. Daniel 2:44; Luke 10: 25-28 God’s word promises that the survivors will be persons "out of all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues" Revelation 7: 9 Drawn together by worship of the true God, by faith in Jesus Christ, and by love for one another, they will truly make up a united human family.

Joshua 23:12. Here there is a strong warning against marrying outside of the Jewish faith.

There are many warnings if I keep on looking for texts. But I think these are enough for now.
